How do I compress an image?

Which format gives the smallest file?
AVIF is usually smallest, followed by WebP, then JPEG. WebP is the default because every modern browser can display it. PNG is lossless and best for screenshots and graphics with sharp edges, but it is usually much larger for photos.
What quality setting should I use?
For photos on the web, 70–80 keeps images looking the same to most people while cutting the size a lot. Use the comparison slider to check fine detail like text and faces before you download.
Why is the compressed file larger than the original?
The original was already well compressed, or you chose PNG for a photo. Lower the quality, pick WebP or AVIF, or keep the original. The tool warns you when this happens.
Are my images uploaded?
No. Compression runs entirely in your browser using the canvas API, so your images never leave your device. Compressing also removes EXIF metadata such as GPS location.
