Frequently Asked Questions
What files does the favicon generator create?
favicon.ico (with 16, 32 and 48px images inside), favicon-16x16.png, favicon-32x32.png, apple-touch-icon.png (180px), 192 and 512px Android icons, a 512px maskable icon, site.webmanifest, and a head.html file with the tags to paste into your page.
What size should my source image be?
Square and at least 512×512 pixels, or an SVG. Smaller images still work but will look soft on high-resolution home screens. Non-square images are centred with empty space added.
Do I still need favicon.ico?
Yes. Browsers and other tools request /favicon.ico automatically even without a link tag, so keeping it avoids 404s and gives older browsers an icon.
Why does the Apple touch icon have a background?
iOS replaces transparent pixels with black on the home screen. The generator fills the Apple icon with your background color, or white if you have not chosen one.
What is a maskable icon?
An icon Android can crop to whatever shape the launcher uses — circle, squircle or rounded square. It must be opaque, with the logo inside the central safe zone, so it is generated with at least 20% padding.
Is my image uploaded?
No. Every icon is rendered and zipped in your browser.
